r/technology on Reddit: Netanyahu Posts ‘Proof of Life’ Video as A.I. Sows Doubts About What’s Real
The five finger thing was done not for proof but because in a twitter post somebody said a previous video was fake because Netanyahu had 6 fingers. However in the video he had 5 fingers, so the op was clowned upon (for miscounting) first by most of twitter and now from the prime minister of Israel himself. My opinion is that a prime minister of any country usually meets hundreds of people every day, so if he was dead we would know pretty quickly. ... What would that do? You could just deepfake by using a body double and replace specific details, like the face..

So when a screenshot from the Netanyahu video appeared to show a distorted hand, the reaction was almost immediate. Beyond technical speculation, the controversy also reflects a deeper trend in online culture: the merging of AI fears and political conspiracy theories. The Internet has increasingly embraced narratives suggesting that public figures are replaced by digital doubles, speeches are generated by artificial intelligence and governments secretly deploy synthetic media for messaging. These theories flourish particularly during moments of uncertainty, when official information is limited and audiences search for alternative explanations.
